Mourt´s Relation

This story begins in the town of Leyden, in the Netherlands, with English settlers boarding the ship Speedwell and sailing for Southampton in England to meet the Mayflower. Together they were bound for a grant of land in New England where they could live free from persecution by the Church of England and the unhealthy influence of the free-thinking Dutch at their adopted home in Leyden. Read why less than half of them actually sailed to the New World.

Follow the struggles of the early colonists in New England as they suffered through the winter weather and widespread sickness that accompanied it. See how lack of sufficient supplies plagued them for several years because their backers were hesitant to continue spending money on a venture that was not showing any signs of profit.

Read the real story of the bold gamble of these families, told in their own words. Witness the early encounters with the Indians on Cape Cod. Go with them as they travel overland to meet the generous Massasoit, the Great Sachem of the Wampanoag Tribe, in whose territory they had settled. Be there as this fledgling band blazed a trail for those who would follow and establish a foothold in a vast territory beyond their imagining.

Mourt´s Relation is the first known account published by the English colonists in Plymouth. Technically, the actual title is A Journal of the Plantation at Plimouth in New England. It has popularly been known by its nickname, Mourt's Relation, for generations. It was published in 1622 in London.

It is believed that the book was probably co-authored by William Bradford and Edward Winslow. At the end of the manuscript is the following inscription:

Plimouth in New-England
this 11th of December, 1621
Your loving friend, E.W.
